Tooth Extractions

When you have a tooth, or multiple teeth, removed from your mouth, you are having a tooth extraction. This involves taking teeth out, in their entirety, to prevent another problem from occurring. ProSmile Dental will provide great attention and care to patients in need of a tooth extraction.

Reasons for a Tooth Extraction
If you have bad tooth decay, gum disease, teeth that are broken beyond repair, abscesses, crowded teeth, or even wisdom teeth that are impacted, then there is a good chance that you will need a tooth extraction treatment to resolve the issue. Depending on the amount of teeth that you will need to have taken out, you can opt for multiple sessions or a one-off session – this is something that you and the dentist will need to discuss. During the course of these treatments, your teeth will be prepped for the extraction surgery, ProSmile Dental will usually perform an extraction while you are fully awake, but under a local anesthetic.

How Tooth Extractions are Performed
The tooth extraction procedure itself is actually fairly simple. A local anesthetic will be injected into your mouth which will be left for a while to let the effects take hold before the surgery begins. From this point, if you are squeamish, you may want to look away. It’s not pleasant but you won’t feel any pain, and it will be done as quickly as possible. The tooth socket is widened, and then the dental surgeon will gently rock the tooth from side to side until it feels loose enough for it to be removed entirely. You will need to be aware that there will be some odd-sounding noises, and a bit of pressure in your mouth, but you will feel no pain.

Once completed, (and believe it or not, this only takes a few minutes per tooth) the socket will be closed once again with stitches, and you will be allowed to go home. Ideally, you will want someone to stay with you for the next 24 hours – you are going to be groggy and you may feel some pain.
