Mouth Guards/Night Guards

If you grind and clench your teeth at night, you may find that a mouth guard from ProSmile Dental is the right option for you. A clever device made with a material that is soft on the surface that is fitted, and hard on the upper surface, it is designed to stop you from clenching your teeth (long term) and prevent any further dental damage (short term).

Usually worn on the lower teeth, but available with top or both sets, the bite guard is designed for three main reasons:

1. To prevent trauma resulting from uneven/improper pressure from your bite (TMJ).
2. To prevent wear and tear on the teeth, caused by the grinding.
3. To stop any potential damage from happening to teeth, bridges or crowns.

Many people don’t realize the damage that is being done to their teeth when they sleep and often live with painful symptoms for years before figuring it out. Headaches, jaw and facial pain, and even earaches are just some of the symptoms that can be relieved and prevented with the use of a night guard. An oral examination and/or dental x-rays is all you need to confirm whether or not your symptoms would benefit from the use of a night guard.

There has been an increase in the number of stores selling night guards. While they may claim to offer a quick fix for a low price, it’s important to remember that no two people’s teeth are the same so a one-size-fits-all night guard may not provide you with the help you need for your problem and in some cases may even make things worse. This is where working together with your dentist comes in. A custom night guard for your teeth can be constructed using a mold of your teeth so that you get the protection you need based on your specific issues. This ensures not only proper fit, but also that your problem and symptoms are getting the professional attention that they require. A proper night guard from your dentist will not only help you feel better but will also save you money on dental work in the end.
